A trip to Mandarmani, India

“The voice of the sea speaks to the soul–”
- Kate Chopin
It makes enormous sense to leave behind the daily grind and escape into nature, once in a while. It helps us clear our minds, rejuvenate our bodies, and appreciate our beautiful world. And, what is more beautiful than the vast sea beneath an open blue sky?
Mandarmani is the perfect place to go when you wish to get away, on a weekend, from the hustle and bustle and gold prices of Kolkata. It is easily accessible by train or car and only a few hours ride away from the city. The journey is agreeable as you will be able to see many ponds, trees, and green fields on the way. The roads are also fine for the most part.
It is best to visit Mandarmani between October to February, when the weather is pleasant. There are hotels and resorts close to the beach that provide reasonably comfortable accommodation. You can eat in the restaurants inside the resorts or you can try the tiny shops on the beach that provide fresh seafood on demand. Tiger prawns, pomfrets, and crabs are fresh and absolutely delicious.
In Mandarmani, you can take a look at the Mohana or the point where the river and the sea meets. The beach there is often invaded by large groups of red crabs. It is quite spectacular!
There are lovely forests along the shoreline and small villages, where the fishermen live. However, the best thing you can enjoy in Mandarmani is the beach itself. It is considered to be the longest motorable beach in the country. So, you can just take you car and drive along the sea for many peaceful miles. Or, you can sit and watch the waves.
Swimming is another option but you must take care as there are no lifeguards and the beaches are not illuminated after dark. At nights, with the high tide, the sea covers up a large part of the shore and the deep sound of the tumultuous sea can be heard much louder and closer.
