Tips for a backpacking trip to India

Before going for a backpacking trip to India it is always good to know a bit about India and its culture. It is always good to learn a few phrases in Hindi which is the national language, but a phrasebook in Hindi would not help if you are in the middle of Karnataka which is in the South of India, where the locals only know kannada. India is divided into various states; each state has a very different local language which is much different than their national language Hindi. It’s like every state is a different country.
Indian guidebooks do provide up to date information about the country’s culture and customs, especially the do’s and don’ts. Unfortunately most backpackers do not read these travel guides, just like not reading the equine insurance guide. Ignoring the travel guide can land you into serious problems.
Always keep the backpack as light as possible. Some items that are good during a trip to India are a padlock, flashlights in case of power cuts, a bed sheet, earplugs, medicines and tampons.
Many backpackers tend to get sick, during their trip to India. This is due to the spicy food over here. It will also take some time for you to get used to the climate as well. It is good to be careful, but do not ruin your trip by being paranoid. Travellers tend to get diarrhoea easily here. It might go away by itself within 24 hours. If it does not stop within 48 hours, then it’s time to see a doctor.
There is quite a lot to do while you are in India, and this would need good health. Many health problems can be avoided by ensuring clean drinking water. The best option for drinking water is buying the sealed bottled water.
