Diabetes – Epidemic of India

India has a population of about 1.1 billion out of which 35 million suffer with diabetes. According to research, by about 2025 the number could increase to 70 million. Diabetes mostly affects the working class. The annual health care cost for diabetes in India is about $2.2 billion. Many people struggle due to the poorly controlled diabetes. This leads to disability, mortality and other health complications. Last year during my holidays I stayed at a hotel in Looe where I met a person from India who would not eat any sweets, upon enquiry I found out that he could not have any sweet due to his diabetic condition.

If this epidemic is not checked, it would soon threaten India’s emerging economy. Projections show India would lose more than $230 billion of national income because of diabetes. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India should set up an investigation team to guide the implementation of diabetes preventive measures. Health care facilities are set up in large urban centers which take care of those localities. In 2008 the National Program on Diabetes was launched in India to bring in the awareness of diabetes in rural areas. It also works towards prevention, establishing diagnostic infrastructure in the rural areas, accessibility and affordability of treatment to all who struggle with this epidemic. They also help in providing physical activity to address diabetics. However the Government of India should do a bit more to prevent diabetes, to save on the valuable lives and money that it loses every year.
