India Outside the Taj Mahal
We all know that India is one of the major emerging world economies, a country whose economy is growing rather than dipping down into recession as many countries in the west are. The population of India is also tipped to overtake that of China’s approximately 1.2 billion within a few decades, making it the most populous nation in the world.
But I feel that too many visitors to India not only ignore the modern face of the country, with its skyscrapers, business parks and impressive city centres, but they also ignore much of its past heritage and culture. Most tourists concentrate on the beaches of Goa or sights like the Taj Mahal, and although these places are essential to see, you don’t want to miss out on what else India can offer to holidaymakers or business travellers alike.

A good way to see the many varied faces of modern India is to hire a car and design you own route around the country. Public transport is widely available, but is often overcrowded and unpleasant, even if you can afford first class. A word of warning about cars though, if you are a real greenie and prefer the new eco fuels, you should be aware that it is not always possible to get biodiesel in the rural areas. Most hire cars will run on bog standard petrol.
So for a personalised tour that will take you behind the scenes of modern India, why not visit Delhi? The old city has all the character of India’s past, while New Delhi, basically just the new part of the city, is a modern, bustling, exciting metropolis.
lesser known treasures
Some of the lesser known treasures of India are Gingee Fort near the city of Tiruvanamalai, a thirteenth century structure offering incredible views over the surrounding countryside. Then there are Himalayan mountains and the tea plantations of the Darjeeling Valley, to name just a few of the amazing sights of this amazing country.
