There is a simple rule that every foreigner must follow when trying to do business in India. Never try to understand India or Indians. This may sound clichéd but you are better off not trying to understand the country or its citizens until you have identified your self with India. India has long been a target of conquerors and businessmen who wanted the same thing-wealth. However, it has always been that India has conquered the conquerors and has gained more from those who came to her seeking wealth.

This is not just about religion alone. The rail network that runs throughout India is primarily what was laid by the Britishers. Of course, they did this to facilitate the plunder. Today, it is this network that is ensuring that connectivity remains high in India at all times. It is natural to feel concerned whether you will have to indulge in corruption when doing business in India. Well, India is as corrupt as any of that nation. Do you give bribes in your country on a daily basis? Obviously not. Well, the same will apply to India as well.

It does not matter whether you are trying to sell horse insurance or are trying to buy iron ore from this country. How this country reacts to you will depend a lot on how you approach this country. If you try to manipulate the system, you will find that it can be easily manipulated. If you try to stick to your stance, you will find that the system will respect you and will accommodate you accordingly.

Of course, make it a point to learn more about its entertainment industry when you are in India to do business. It is one of the best examples of how entertainment and money can come together and lead a wonderfully symbiotic relation. The entertainment activities that take place in India today are primarily related to commerce and wealth gaining.

We all know that India is one of the major emerging world economies, a country whose economy is growing rather than dipping down into recession as many countries in the west are. The population of India is also tipped to overtake that of China’s approximately 1.2 billion within a few decades, making it the most populous nation in the world.

But I feel that too many visitors to India not only ignore the modern face of the country, with its skyscrapers, business parks and impressive city centres, but they also ignore much of its past heritage and culture. Most tourists concentrate on the beaches of Goa or sights like the Taj Mahal, and although these places are essential to see, you don’t want to miss out on what else India can offer to holidaymakers or business travellers alike.

A good way to see the many varied faces of modern India is to hire a car and design you own route around the country. Public transport is widely available, but is often overcrowded and unpleasant, even if you can afford first class. A word of warning about cars though, if you are a real greenie and prefer the new eco fuels, you should be aware that it is not always possible to get biodiesel in the rural areas. Most hire cars will run on bog standard petrol.

So for a personalised tour that will take you behind the scenes of modern India, why not visit Delhi? The old city has all the character of India’s past, while New Delhi, basically just the new part of the city, is a modern, bustling, exciting metropolis.

 lesser known treasures

Some of the lesser known treasures of India are Gingee Fort near the city of Tiruvanamalai, a thirteenth century structure offering incredible views over the surrounding countryside. Then there are Himalayan mountains and the tea plantations of the Darjeeling Valley, to name just a few of the amazing sights of this amazing country.

Those who have lived in India will understand the pun hidden in the name of the website. CBSE happens to stand for Central Board of Secondary Education. This Board supplements the efforts of Boards in each State set up for Secondary Education. Being a Centrally supported body, it has access to more funds and is run more professionally. Indians can be paranoid about education. In such a scenario, having your child studying in a CBSE school is often considered the best option.

In such a scenario, the humorous and even irreverent pun on the name is really funny. Jokes apart, students of the Central Board often end up growing up disconnected from the real India. Its culture and environment is not something that one can learn from ivory towers. You have to get into the mess and understand what makes the country tick.

Instead of traveling around in hybrid cars, you should take the local autos or tuk tuks which are often overstuffed and crammed with school kids. Some may find this inappropriate or even dangerous. However, this is the real India and there is no hiding from this fact.

Keep this in mind when you are going to India on a vacation. If you want to stay away from the messy and chaotic life of India, just change your travel plans and go to a standard destination. On the other hand, if you are indeed keen on learning how the real India lives, learn to be humble and do as Indians do when living in the country.

India has a population of about 1.1 billion out of which 35 million suffer with diabetes. According to research, by about 2025 the number could increase to 70 million. Diabetes mostly affects the working class. The annual health care cost for diabetes in India is about $2.2 billion. Many people struggle due to the poorly controlled diabetes. This leads to disability, mortality and other health complications. Last year during my holidays I stayed at a hotel in Looe where I met a person from India who would not eat any sweets, upon enquiry I found out that he could not have any sweet due to his diabetic condition.

If this epidemic is not checked, it would soon threaten India’s emerging economy. Projections show India would lose more than $230 billion of national income because of diabetes. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India should set up an investigation team to guide the implementation of diabetes preventive measures. Health care facilities are set up in large urban centers which take care of those localities. In 2008 the National Program on Diabetes was launched in India to bring in the awareness of diabetes in rural areas. It also works towards prevention, establishing diagnostic infrastructure in the rural areas, accessibility and affordability of treatment to all who struggle with this epidemic. They also help in providing physical activity to address diabetics. However the Government of India should do a bit more to prevent diabetes, to save on the valuable lives and money that it loses every year.

If you are thinking about traveling to India you might want to consider how you can get a much deeper understanding of a complex nation. Many people will set off to the great sub continent with an image cemented in their minds of sun dappled Goan beaches and the majestic Taj Mahal. Others, are interested in ancient sites or wild life.

If you are interested in getting a real taste of what life in India is like today, it would be a good idea to try exploring in a way that you haven’t thought of before. One option is a house swap. lofts north London are in great demand for holiday home swaps and you are likely to get an absolutely fantastic place in return in any of the major cities. There are a number of internet sites that specialize in this type of thing and a quick google search will sort you out. Another great thing to do is to take a short course of some sort. You can choose any of the reliable tourist option like dance, cookery, or art.

It is also worth thinking about making it a working holiday. India is a global hub for the digital economy and you could easily find a short course in computer programming, digital design, or web programming and design. A choice like this is going to give you a unique opportunity to meet locals and develop friendships and business contacts that are invaluable.
Before going for a backpacking trip to India it is always good to know a bit about India and its culture. It is always good to learn a few phrases in Hindi which is the national language, but a phrasebook in Hindi would not help if you are in the middle of Karnataka which is in the South of India, where the locals only know kannada. India is divided into various states; each state has a very different local language which is much different than their national language Hindi. It’s like every state is a different country.

Indian guidebooks do provide up to date information about the country’s culture and customs, especially the do’s and don’ts. Unfortunately most backpackers do not read these travel guides, just like not reading the equine insurance guide. Ignoring the travel guide can land you into serious problems.

Always keep the backpack as light as possible. Some items that are good during a trip to India are a padlock, flashlights in case of power cuts, a bed sheet, earplugs, medicines and tampons.

Many backpackers tend to get sick, during their trip to India. This is due to the spicy food over here. It will also take some time for you to get used to the climate as well. It is good to be careful, but do not ruin your trip by being paranoid. Travellers tend to get diarrhoea easily here. It might go away by itself within 24 hours. If it does not stop within 48 hours, then it’s time to see a doctor.

There is quite a lot to do while you are in India, and this would need good health. Many health problems can be avoided by ensuring clean drinking water. The best option for drinking water is buying the sealed bottled water.

India has more to offer the world than curry. While this may seem like an obvious statement, it’s important to remember that cultural stereotypes – especially those perpetuated by the mainstream media – should be immediately disregarded when visiting a country. Apart from anything, it is far too easy to spot established patterns and ignore the other cultural idiosyncrasies which may be far more interesting. I like to think of it as cultural lock picking - somehow navigating around the barriers and obstacles in order to enjoy a nation (and its population) for what they are rather than what Apu represents on the Simpsons. What struck me when I visited India was the sheer number of cattle wandering the streets. In England, cattle are only ever kept as livestock or occasionally domestic pets. They live in rural areas almost exclusively, penned in by hedges and fences to prevent them becoming a nuisance to traffic. In India there are no such systems in place. The cattle wander the streets, taking priority over motorised vehicles and occasionally holding up dual carriageways for hours while patient drivers queue behind. People give the cattle gifts and offerings – the animals are very sacred in Indian culture, especially Hindu communities – including chains of bright flowers and fresh grass from the parks. Not only is the generosity towards cattle peculiar in a nation where poverty is rife, but also strangely touching. It strikes an Englishman as odd that these slow, friendly animals are held in such high esteem in a largely vegetarian country.

Hitchhiking has been the way that people have chosen to see India for many decades. In recent years though hitchhiking has been increasingly less popular due to young people’s concern for their safety and for the potential for danger. Young people are increasingly travelling substantially further afield, choosing to head to Asia or Australia and New Zealand on some round the world journey rather than staying close to home and learning about their neighbours in a much more sustainable way.
And it’s a very sad occurrence. There’s no reason not to hitchhike these days. And if I’m honest I think I’d say that with so many fewer people trying to hitchhike each year, your chance of waiting for too long at the edge of the road is decreased because hitchhikers are such a rare sight on India’s roads these days. I have found while hitchhiking through much of India that many people are very happy to see hitchhikers on the roads of India.
Many of the people who picked me up had hitchhiked themselves and would often go very far out of their way in order to help a hitchhiker on their journey, even providing accommodation and food to help them. While the money you earned from investing with the help of Galvan research and trading could be spent on long haul flights to sandy beaches I think you’ll learn a lot more about your country, your friends, and your self by hitchhiking. You’ll learn how complete sorrow can turn to utter joy in only a few moments after waiting for many hours, only to eventually get picked up when you thought there really was no chance of success. You’ll also learn all about the bits of the country not in the guidebook, and you’ll get to talk to people from the country, rather than just guessing at what the people are thinking.
